‘…an exploration of Tendring’s rich social heritage’
This summer in Tendring The Grand Theatre of Lemmings will be touring to five towns with the “magnificent museum of coastal curiosities”; an exploration of Tendring’s rich social heritage. This is more than just an exhibition though, it will curated by story tellers with true tales of extraordinary characters and events on this coastline. It will also be brought to life with great seaside entertainment including an amazing ‘Flea Circus’.
The Grand Theatre of Lemmings are a pioneering theatre company that has produced touring shows for theatres and festivals and whose key skill is in engaging audiences around the world. Recently they have worked on heritage projects, produced festivals and developed arts projects for schools.
The concept for Resorting to the Coast was dreamt up by Mandy Medlicott, from the Lemmings after she read ‘Roughs and Vagabonds’, a book about touring theatre groups in this area. What she didn’t realise at the time was just how amazing the history of this coast was. She took the idea to the Essex County history officer and the project took off.
Researching seaside entertainment we discovered that our own style of work originates from Victorian Seaside Entertainers. Because they had to cater to all classes of audience, rich, poor, young and old, they developed a style of performance that eventually became what we now call “light entertainment”.
This project is designed specifically to engage the people who live in these seaside towns. We firmly believe that knowing about their extraordinary heritage will encourage them to take a pride in the place where they live.
You will learn about the extraordinary history of our coast line in a fun and interactive way, be part of a team, make friends and learn new skills.
You will take away an understanding of the story of the seaside and a pride in where you live.
Our museum is touring with a daily program of fantastic seaside entertainment, including escapology, magic, acrobatics and much more!
